NO DANCE is a sound piece resulting from the mixing of 4 tracks of different lengths repeated indefinitely. The resulting sound mix, in which many of the sounds are percussive, creates random rhythms that fit into a broader and more general concept of rhythm. The NO DANCE videos incorporate a live musician who tries to fit into the resulting mix. The 2014 version was performed by drummer Armand Parellada and the 2016 version by guitarist Jordi Pegenaute.
When I was working with GRAN HALL, I thought of making a rhythmic version with some fragments chosen from this sound bank, with the particularity that the fragments considered percussive had to have the same duration and I would incorporate them indefinitely and repeated a few times within a sound mix that mixed 4 tracks at random; In this way the rhythm was altered each time a new unpredictable fragment was incorporated, which in turn created another asynchronous rhythm, and so on in and out of fragments, and he assumed that in the end, everything would fit into a more general order in a disorderly way. NO DANCE worked well in an exhibition at the Palacio Ducal de los Borja in Gandía, and then I wanted to perform it with a musician on drums who should try to join the piece live. I proposed it to Armand Parellada, indicating to him a fragment of 14 repetitions in which he could intermittently join in following the main rhythm of NO DANCE, and that in the rest, where the superimposed rhythms were unpredictable, he could do whatever he wanted. After a while I made the same proposal to the guitarist Jordi Pegenaute. And this is what they did: they overcame the setback.
