CHOOSE, BY VICENS VACCA, ON CORREOS SCREENS
Vicens Vacca and Correos have reached an agreement to display the work CHOOSE on the screens in their offices. The first presentation will take place from September 22 to October 21, 2026, on the screen located at the entrance of the Correos office at 14 Carrer d’Agustí Vinyamata in Granollers. Subsequently, the work will also be shown on screens at Correos offices in Barcelona and Madrid.
CHOOSE unfolds in three versions —Catalan, Spanish and English— through cut-out and recomposed letters. The procedure recalls anonymous messages: a form of writing without its own handwriting and without an identifiable sender. The phrase seems to arrive from an indeterminate place, like a warning or a found note.
The three words —CHOOSE, CONDEMNATION, IRREPARABLE— do not form a closed statement. They operate as a combinatory structure in which meaning shifts according to the order of reading: choosing may be a form of loss; decision may contain condemnation; what is excluded may become irreparable.
The work questions the contemporary idea of choice as an exercise of freedom. Within political, social or commercial systems, choosing often means operating inside a pre-established framework, where disagreement can only be expressed partially. In this context, the possibility of a negative vote —a vote not in favour of, but against, capable of subtracting from and neutralising positive support— introduces a critical reading of participation and its limits.
This tension also extends to the sphere of consumption and everyday decision-making. Constant choice is presented as an expansion of possibilities, but it may also function as a form of obligation: to buy, to respond, to subscribe, to take a position. CHOOSE thus points towards a less visible zone of choice: the possibility of suspending it, of waiting, or of refusing the pace imposed by the offer.
The work turns language into a device of pressure. Its formal anonymity, its repetition across several languages and its appearance as an urgent message situate choice not as a simple faculty, but as a field of tension between freedom, refusal and loss.
