In the terror of the TWIN TOWERS attack, I edited an acoustic climate in which, during one hour, different sound fragments affected by the Doppler effect – the one that makes us identify whether an object is approaching or moving away depending on the variation in the sound it emits when doing so – were played in stereo with the speakers significantly distanced from each other in order to clearly identify the movement of the sound from left to right and the other way round. Later, when Karlheinz Stockhausen made some unfortunate statements saying that the terrorist act was the greatest work of art ever made, I thought of adding to the acoustic climate three notes that, in English musical notation, could make up the sequence D E A D. This had already been used by Bruce Nauman in some of his artworks, but it seemed to me that they fitted just right, both musically and in the words, and so it stayed that way.
Now, after so many years and so much terror, I don’t know if this sound work should be played uninterruptedly or never again. 29/08/2017
