The potential of modern techniques and methods of reproduction have enabled Vacca to carry out the work L’ART ARTÍSTIC. It consists of a new soundtrack to substitute the original music composed by Fumio Hayasaka for Akira Kurosawa’s film Throne of Blood. The displeasure experienced by the artist on hearing the original soundtrack in relation to the Japanese film director’s images, suggested the creation of new sonic environment that would inevitably transform them and enhance the dramatic quality of the film.
Years after I had seen that version of Macbeth for the first time, I found it in a video-club and made a copy of it so I could adjust it to what I thought the soundtrack for that film show be. By then I had already seen the versions done by Orson Wells and Roman Polanski. Cristina Lladó got in touch with the owners of the copyright, Toho International company, and requested permission to show the film with a different soundtrack and they answered forbidding any intervention. Luis Francisco Pérez, who wrote a text referring to it, made the same request to Casa Asia (Barcelona) and again the answer was negative. So I decided to do it anyway, but as I didn’t have the master copy I had to weed out the sound without eliminating the dialogues, and make it all work in a more or less imperfect way, which is just how I like things to work. These are the circumstances that made it all take much longer than I usually need to do a piece, and in the meantime I worked on other projects, so in the end I don’t know whether it didn’t all end just as it had begun.
I show the illegal version confidentially to anyone who manifests a particular curiosity.
