Hall Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
An installation in the entrance hall of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona consisting of a number of strips of adhesive tape stuck to the ground. The strips, adhered with the assistance of a number of people, were printed with the sentence “I …. (space for the participant to write his or her name) separate the light from darkness”.
The strips were to be stuck to the floor between the projected rays of sun and the shadow projected by some object nearby. After a while it became obvious that the shadow had moved due to our planet’s rotation, causing the description of the piece to breakdown. The following day, if it was sunny, there would be a coincidence once more for a few moments, earlier or later according to the time of year, and then it would unfailingly deviate again. The time of day and the shadow could only coincide again exactly in a year’s time, if the sun was shining.
Planetary collaboration is required for this piece to avoid complete failure.
Some years later, in 2000, Vacca used the name, if not the concept, for an acoustic piece in the exhibition ALS ACTORS SECUNDARIS by Pep Agut at MACBA.
