In 1984, Jordi Benito asked me to make a piece in his studio. Up until then I had made several experiments in the field of painting but I didn’t feel comfortable and I wanted to expand the work without knowing in what direction to go. I remember there were various failed attempts before I constructed the final piece, which finally took shape as three different elements: a conical metallic piece cut into two identical halves fixed face to face, a chair with its back half upholstered in blue silk paper, and a vertical sheet of glass with an inscription in typescript that read ESTOY MUERTO (I am dead).
That sentence liberated me from the persistent unease caused by the lack of definition regarding the direction my work should take. Sitting on the chair, I came to think that there was little cause for concern about what was happening to me because “I was already dead”.

Those words have accompanied me through the years and I have used them to produce a series of altered images in which, almost always, my face appears in various degrees of recognizability.

The closer I get, the less I draw myself.
