In 1998, I conceived a musical piece that used of a fragment of the well-known Mexican corrido “Adelita”. This song was originally dedicated to the women who took part in the Mexican Revolution, as fighting forces and as support units in the struggle, and who gained a degree of equality never seen before in that country. The violence required to conquer freedom had made it possible. In 1998, as at the present time, gender violence is meted out in Mexico almost gratuitously within a frame of unhinged understanding, in a nation given demographically to ceaseless turmoil.
Breaking up the musical fragments in a non-rhythmic manner causes formal maladjustments that turn the piece into a caricature, a deformed version of what was once a powerful symbol of liberation.
