Vacca

2010: BETWEEN DEXTERITY AND DISASTER

2010

Between Dexterity and Disaster, in its three editions in Catalan, Spanish and English, is dedicated to the study, analysis and presentation of the works of Vicens Vacca, an artist who since 1984 has created a corpus of works and a discourse that has revolved fundamentally around the interest in sound and the production of sound works on the margins of conceptual art. We speak of margins because concepts are not the only ones that the artist has prioritized when developing his works, and because of the wide range of means and procedures, including writing, that he has used in an absolutely free manner. Furthermore, Vacca has always distanced himself from orthodox approaches and the impositions of the market. His artistic activity has developed tangentially to that sphere of art that corresponds to its fashions and its institutions.

I chose an alphabetical index to present my work because it is a conventional system of classification that has large gaps in its entirety; many of the letters of the alphabet are not used, since there is no section that begins with some of them. This also allows me to show “what I have not done” through the gaps caused, with all the burden of helplessness, error and humor that publishing these unoccupied spaces implies. A book, an unfulfilled agenda, like the trajectory of any person that shows what they have done in the long course of time they have spent there.
